A full moon and strong winds

Hurricane Sandy is whapping the east coast of the US tonight, and this isn't helping...

A full moon! Full moon, high tides, and hurricanes: not a good combo. This storm is clearly huge. We are already getting alarmingly high wind gusts just as the storm is hitting land down around Maryland and DC and NJ. It's also very strange to have the wind blowing from the south - southeast instead of the north. The wind usually blows from the north around here.

A flock of Canada geese flew over me as I was taking photos. They had a hard time flying straight! My friend Ronna watched geese being buffeted by the wind over at her place too.

We're hoping the power doesn't go out tonight, but I filled the bathtub with water just in case. We still don't have a generator (it's on the shopping list), so when the electricity fails, so does our well pump. No water, no toilet flushing, no nothin'. Still, we'll have it a lot easier than those down in the US bearing the brunt of Sandy. Stay safe, everyone!

Such a beautiful moon, though. Ronna told me it's a Hunter's Moon.

    1. I lived through category 2 Hurricane Juan in Nova Scotia in 2003. This should be a piece of cake. I did fill the bathtub in case trees take out power lines! :)

  3. Our daughter has lost power and now we have no way to check on them; saying prayers they make it through the night. They live in New Jersey and this storm has come down pretty hard on them and New York.
Some good news...Your name was chosen for the October Apron Give-Away:-))

Hope your daughter is doing okay in the storm... it's crazy down there!

  4. I live in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. (far inland, fortunately), and the rain and wind have been brutal. I'm well-stocked with flashlights, candles, blankets, bottled water, and food in case we lose power.

  5. So far, here it is just wind and rain. The wind is picking up, though. Hope everyone stays safe tonight. I hear that we will be hit the hardest in the next 24 hours.

    1. It seems like it wasn't as bad for us as they predicted, thank goodness!

  7. Amazing moon here too last night. I saw a few Cranes heading south yesterday. They fly very high, and make the most wonderful sound; I find it all quite emotional. Even more so when they return.

I hope everyone's OK over on your side of the pond.

    1. It's the Americans who really suffered in this storm. What a mess!

  8. I go way back to Hurricane Hazel in about 1955 and the great flood of '46 in Elmira, NY. It's all so romantic isn't it? NOT!!!

    1. I heard all about Hurricane Hazel, growing up in Toronto. So unusual for a hurricane to hit that far inland. And surely you're too young to remember the flood of '46! :)

    Great photos, Natalie.

  10. Well, I suppose one could say, it all makes for an interesting time. I do hope you all keep safe and the storm abates enough to keep things under control.

  12. Wonderful pictures. Big wild weather event over there. "Global Storming" or just random chance? My interpretation of the gathering evidence is that people may need to get more used to these things in future. We can debate the causes but the trends seem to be becoming clear. Over here in Britain the Atlantic seems to be getting dumped on us from the clouds in much bigger dollops, each year.

    1. Couldn't agree with you more. Whacky weather is the trend! It was 20C here today. It's supposed to be 8C at this time of year.
